The Logistics: Before You Go
Visas in 2026
As of January 2026, the standard entry requirement is the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). While there have been pilot projects for visa-fee waivers in over 30 countries, the standard procedure remains to apply online via the official ETA portal. The cost is typically $50 USD for a 30-day tourist visa.
Best Time to Visit
For this specific itinerary (South and West coasts), the best weather is from December to April. If you are travelling between May and September, you might want to swap the southern beaches for the East Coast (Trincomalee or Arugam Bay).
Transport
- Private Driver: Highly recommended for 10 days. It saves time and costs roughly $60-$80 USD per day.
- Train: A must-do for the Kandy to Ella leg.
The Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Relax in Colombo

Most international flights land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Contrary to popular belief, the airport is actually closer to Negombo than Colombo. You can either choose to go to Negombo or to Colombo.
If you choose to stay in Negombo;
- Do: Walk the beach at sunset and visit the sprawling fish market.
- Stay: Negombo Beach.
If you choose to stay in Colombo;
- Do: Make a reservation at “Ministry of Crab”, one of the 50 best restaurants in Asia.
Where to Stay in Colombo

Where to Eat in Colombo
- Ministry of Crab
- Palmyrah Restaurant – famous for milk hoppers
- Monsoon
- Butter Boutique– famous for tres leches
- Cafe Kumbuk
After resting from the flight, visit the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka: Kandy, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruva. On the way to Sigiriya, we stopped to watch Sri Lankan Traditional Drums and Dance.

Day 2: The Lion Rock and Anuradhapura

This is a big adventure day. Wake up early!
- Stay: Sigiriya or Habarana.
- Morning: Climb Sigiriya (Lion Rock). It opens at 7:00 AM. Get there when it opens to beat the heat and the crowds. The 1,200 steps are worth it for the view of the ancient water gardens and the jungle below.
- Budget Tip: If the $30-$36 USD entry fee is too steep, hike Pidurangala Rock opposite Sigiriya for $3 USD and arguably a better view of the fortress.
- Afternoon: Take a short trip to Anuradhapura to visit the ancient city’s Buddhist Temples.
- Budget Tip: Don’t get tickets for Anuradhapura in advance. Instead, get a guide who will take you to all the free Buddhist temples ( The best ones are, anyway, free to enter).
- Have extra time: Take a jeep safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park. This is the best place in Asia to see large herds of wild elephants gathering around the water tanks.

This is going to be a long day, so wake up early.
- Morning: Hike up to Pidurangala Rock, which is just opposite Sigiriya Lion’s rock to see the sunrise with the background of Lion Rock. Trust me, the views are worth it.
- Ticket Price: LKR 500 to LKR 1000 for foreign tourists ( £1.18-2.36)
- Tip: Wear hiking clothes and shoes as the climb will get steep at some points. And don’t do this hike near darkness, like sunset.
- Quick breakfast at your hotel or a restaurant checkout from the hotel in Sigiriya, and head for Kandy.
- Afternoon: On the way to Kandy, we go to the Dambulla cave temples
- Stop: Visit the Dambulla Cave Temple (Golden Temple). A UNESCO World Heritage site featuring five caves packed with 150+ Buddha statues and stunning ceiling paintings.
- Tip: Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) or you won’t be allowed in.

- Drive south toward the central highlands (2.5 hours). On the way, stop at a spice garden in Matale to see how cinnamon and cardamom are grown.
- Arrive in Kandy and walk around Kandy Lake
- Evening: Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic during the evening pooja (ceremony). The drumming and atmosphere are intense and spiritual.

Day 5: Nuwara Eliya & The Blue Train

Nuwara Eliya is called ‘the little England’ of Sri Lanka, as it still preserves the iconic red-bricked buildings of the British Era.
- Morning: Visit the Post office in Nuwara Eliya and stroll through the little town.

- Afternoon: Catch the famous blue train from Nanu Oya station to Ella. This is widely considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world. Hang out by the door (carefully!) and watch waterfalls and tea pickers pass by.
- The train journey from Nanu Oya to Ella takes 4 hrs; this is the same Kandy-Ella train that takes 6 hrs from Kandy.
- Tip: If you haven’t got the ticket in advance, don’t fret, go to the train station ticket master and get first-class train tickets. The queue starts from inside the office. We were told about this little trick by our driver 😉
- Reach Ella, have lunch, and then go for a hike to Little Adam’s Peak to see the sunset. It’s an easy 45-minute walk with spectacular views of Ella Gap.
- As you come down, you will see the iconic Nine Arch bridge.

- Evening: Walk along the tracks to the Nine Arch Bridge. If you are lucky, you can spot the blue train over the nine-arch bridge at 4 pm IST.
- Enjoy the cafe culture in Ella town. Chill and relax in the lovely restaurant and bars in the town centre.
Where to Stay in Ella

Where to Eat in ELLA
- Cafe Belle Ella
- Cafe Chill
- Sintha bara Lonthe – Konich

Day 6: Ella – The Backpacker’s Paradise
Ella has a chill, misty vibe perfect for hiking.
- Morning: Take your ride to Diyaluma Waterfalls, Sri Lanka’s second-tallest waterfall.
- Cascading from high mountains, Diyaluma may be a little off the beaten track, but the views are epic and natural infinity pools make the 1.5-2-hour journey worth it.
- To get to Diyaluma, ask your driver to take you from Ella to Poonagala, through quintessentially Sri Lankan tea plantations. After arriving in the small village of Poonagala, hike downhill through long, dry grass for 30 minutes before getting the first glimpse of the upper Diyaluma falls. A short walk further, you will be standing above a sheer 220m rush of water to the valley floor below.

- Afternoon: Take a Sri Lankan cooking Class
- Checkout and head towards Yala. Descend from the cool hills to the dry lowlands of the southeast (approx. 2-3 hour drive).
- Evening: Check into your hotel in Tissamaharama or a glamping site near the park. Relax by the pool; it will be much hotter here than in Ella!
Day 7: Chasing Leopards in Yala
- Morning: 5:00 AM wake-up call for a safari in Yala National Park. Yala has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. You’ll also likely see sloth bears, crocodiles, and peacocks.

- Afternoon: Checkout done; Drive west along the coast to Galle (approx. 2.5 hours).
- Evening: Seafood dinner on the beach.
Where to Stay in YALA

Where to Eat in YALA
- Most lodges and safaris will provide meals.
Day 8: Galle fort & shopping

Rest up and enjoy the coconut-lined beaches; you have earned it. We went scuba diving (1 dive is £60 pp). We were picked up in the morning and then sent back by lunch.
Other activities:
- Shopping in Galle Fort: Head to Galle Fort. This 17th-century Dutch fortification is a UNESCO site that feels like a European village dropped in the tropics. Walk the ramparts at sunset, shop for gems, and grab an iced coffee in a colonial-era cafe.
- Visit some turtle sanctuaries: The island conserves the population of turtles by keeping them safe when eggs are laid until the turtles hatch, and then safely released into the ocean.
- Stroll around the village and have dinner in one of the listed restaurants. I can vouch for the food to be top-notch in each of them.
